Lori Drew asks again for dismissal

The attorneys representing Lori Drew are once again asking for a dismissal in her federal fraud case. If you do not recall Lori Drew allegedly posed as a teenage boy by the name of Josh Evans on MySpace in order to harass 13-year-old Megan Meier. Megan was so distraught that she committed suicide.

Her attorneys argue that the federal statute that she was charged under only applies to interstate theft.

The prosecution claims the Drew committed theft of information by obtaining information about Megan Meier through deceit.

A hearing will be held on the matter on Oct 30th.

I hope this case brings about clearer laws against this kind of behavior. Clearly Lori Drew is a sociopath–she’s never expressed in any way that she realizes the enormity of her actions and their result. If she was as blameless as she claims, one would think she’d be beside herself that her actions led to a young girl’s death, no matter what her opinion of that girl’s mental state was.

Wendy, the main difference is that Megan Meier was a child. Drew *knew* that she was messing around with a child, and Drew *knew* that Megan was depressive – and yet she still went ahead and screwed around with Megan’s head.

I’m not saying it’s appropriate for adults to go into chat rooms and on dating services, pretending to be someone or something they’re not, but adults, at least, are more likely to have the common sense and instincts to avoid trouble. Whether they choose to use them or not is, of course, another matter – and there are some who just are far too trusting. But even if they are fooled by someone, adults are still more likely to be able to deal with the after effects and feelings of shame (deserved or not) and frustration.

A child doesn’t have those same kind of coping mechanisms – and for teens, in particular, everything is so much “bigger” than it is for an adult. A crush is the love of their live, a breakup is the end of their world. Something like what Drew did is going to be magnified by a thousand times over the same thing happening to an adult.

Well, if someone like Lori did this to my child,the longer she stalled &amp fiddle-fucked around,the more I would destroy her life little by little.Like Lindley said, the internet offers great annomity,so you’d be surprised the things that could be done. Like, oh, ordering questionable items, and having them delivered to Lori. There are countless ways you can shred someone’s life, ASIDE from the shit Lori pulled. An eye for an eye, I say.

Seriously? Have you all lost your minds? Has anyone out there stopped to realize what this type of case (especially if found guilty) would mean to the public at large on the internet? Basically what we’re saying here is that if ANYONE breaks ANY piece of an EULA or Terms of Service on ANY website, that person can be federally tried in court for fraud. I agree that Lori is a complete piece of shit but attempting to convict her and put her in jail is just idiotic. Ok, so she’s mean, ok so she fucked with someone’s head. Please tell me that no one that has posted on this site has EVER done that. Everyone here is 100% pure and has never been mean or spiteful to anyone else. WRONG! On top of that, the comments about teenagers not having the “same coping mechanizisms” is crap. This country needs to get their heads out of their ass and start actually teaching their children about REAL LIFE. Quit shielding kids from anything and everything that might upset them, hurt them, make them mad, or god forbid, break their fragile little hearts. Doesn’t anyone realize that by trying to shelter our children so much we’re only harming them more. The more shelter you give to someone the higher propensity they will have to do something like this…..commit suicide because your ONLINE BOYFRIEND THAT YOU’VE NEVER MET BREAKS UP WITH YOU. That has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the person on the other end of the keyboard and EVERYTHING to do with the complete emotional instability of the person who killed themselves. If the parents were SOOOOOOO worried about this child thinking that something like this could happen then maybe they needed to pay more attention to what their own child was doing. Just because everyone seems to be more selfish and busy worrying about themselves doesn’t automatically give a license to make everything someone else’s fault. Take responsibility for your own children, raise them yourself, and actually expose them to the world as it is and they will be ready to take on bull shit like this!
