Illinois teens sentenced for rape

It seems like I’ve been blogging about this case since forever and now it comes to a very anti-climactic and unjust end in my opinion.

Then 18-year-old Angel Alverio and then 17-year-old Tony Pacheco met a 14-year-old girl over MySpace, got her drunk until she passed out and raped her.

So how does the justice system punish these two? Well for all intents and purposes they didn’t They both received 24 months of probation and 10 years on the sex offender registry.

That’s a great message. Commit rape and you’ll only get probation. Pathetic.

That is disgusting. It seems judges are sending messages to rapists that it is ok “boys will be boys to rape and molest. While penalties for everything else is getting higher it seems rape is heading toward a place where it is no longer a crime.

I don’t know the story, but often people are convicted in the media without everyone knowing the entire circumstances. I have a difficult time believing that these young men are hard core rapists. Did the girl’s parents find out and then she said another story? I don’t know. What I am seeing more and more is that these criminal cases come up because of MySpace. Perhaps the parents and the internet should take most of the accountability. Parents should lock their children from sites that are inappropriate. I know I did. They did not like it, but I locked them off many internet sites. There are too many young men being ruined for life because of these sites. No one knows exactly what happened, but it is always the young men at fault. The parents and young girls should also have some accountability of who they contact. Plus they shouldn’t lie about their age. Why should only the young men have to pay the price when they weren’t the ones who either contacted in the first place or lied about their age?

And I am speaking as a mother of both girls and boys.

natalie – someone has to draw the line – the line has been drawn – it is illegal – against the law, no matter what, for a young man over the age of consent, to have sex with a young girl under the age of consent. Period. It is a law for a reason.

That being said, it does not mean the sex offender laws are not screwed up and should be changed. I agree – stupid young men are not pedophiles or predators – it appears these guys committed a stupid act. But, how are they going to be taught not to do this? If this behavior is left unchecked, it will only get worse.

Sure – this girl needs help, and will suffer consequences – just like the young men.

Lesson to be learned – do not get yourself in the situation unless you can handle the possible consequences. Don’t do the crime, unless you can pay the time.

I also recommend that every parent educate their young men and women on exactly, specifically, what type of behavior is unacceptable and against the law. Unfortunately, most parents do not.

I certainly do not support rapists and understand why anyone would be upset at the prospect of a person getting 24 months probation for rape. But I personally know Angel, and he has never even met his accuser and he is definitely not a rapist. After spending two years in cook county jail where, since everyone seems to follow the news you know has been recently found by the U.S. government to perpetuate a culture where guards systematically violate inmates human and civil rights, he accepted a plea deal that allowed him to get out, whereas if he continued to fight the case, he could easily spend another two years in jail simply waiting to go to trial. I know someone else who had to undergo many painful procedures after suffering a broken jaw after being attacked by over 10 guards. Even if he did do something wrong, that kind of force is never necessary and shouldn’t be tolerated. And you should be disgusted that your tax dollars pay not only for expensive medical care but pricey settlements paid to victims of such brutality. Also, most people in cook county jail cannot afford proper legal representation so accepting a plea deal that allows immediately release with probation vs. going to trial with a public defender who probably is so overloaded with cases and therefore cannot spend adequate time preparing for trial, I think most people in that situation would feel lucky to pick the former. I definitely do not think rape is ever ok, but you cant always draw informed conclusions from the selective facts that the media portrays because they often produce stories that elicit such emotional reactions and all too often we don’t question the injustices that happen because we assume that anyone in jail, even though most have not been convicted, are in fact guilty, when most simply can’t afford bail or a lawyer.

I personally would never support such a broad general claim like that without the evidence to back it up. However most people can agree that there are at least some innocent people who do end up serving time. I was only saying what I know for a fact about Angel. I would never speak up for him if I thought there was even a chance he could have done this. My sister in law was raped, and after they had the guy in custody they let him go after a couple days telling her that he gave a different story, saying she had been partying with them all crazy, so this is not something I take lightly. I might be wrong but it seems that many people can agree that there is something seriously wrong with our criminal justice system, even though there is a lot of disagreement about what those problems may be.

ok bri… if you actually read what NS wrote, s/he is not saying that s/he is right simply because they know him. There are a lot of facts that were not included in the news story, some of which NS has given us. The guys plead guilty not because they were, but because that was the only option that ensured they’d be going home. Everyone here obviously has an opinion on this but at least NS’s is an informed one!
