No apologies to the Meiers

This is an article about the interview Megan Meier’s parents gave on the Today Show yesterday. Where they say that the ‘adults’ who caused their daughter to kill herself have offered no apology. In fact, they’ve done quite the reverse.

“They’ve absolutely offered no apologies,” Ron Meier told TODAY co-host Matt Lauer on Monday. “They sent us a letter in the mail, basically saying that they might feel a little bit of responsibility, but they don’t feel no guilt or remorse or anything for what they did.”

Rather, said Tina Meier, the people are upset with her for going public with their story. Last week, while shopping, she ran into the woman who invented the hoax, Tina Meier said.

“She asked me to stop doing all of this,” she told Lauer. “I told her that we would not stop, that we were going to continue for justice for Megan because we knew what they did.”

The Meiers have not named the people because they do not want to identify their teenage daughter, who had once been a friend of Megan’s.

Wow, how in the hell do you become that callous in your life to not apologize but to complain when you caused a girl to kill herself.

And speaking of not naming them I’ve decided to lift that restriction since the St. Louis Journal has. And it seems that Curt and Lori Drew are receiving just a modicum of karma for what they did to Megan Meier…

One night last week, well after most of the families in this quiet community went to bed, a half-dozen police cars sped down Waterford Crystal Drive, lights flashing.

A man, they were told, had been fatally shot inside a home.

Neighbors opened doors, peered out windows and watched. As many as 15 deputies, they said, drew weapons and charged the home of Lori and Curt Drew.

But there was no body lying in a pool of blood. No weapon in Curt Drew’s hand.

The call was a prank, one of many at the Drews’ home this year. A lawn job. A brick through a window. Threatening phone calls. Paintball attacks.

The neighborhood is angry.

But now it’s not just the neighborhood, most of the country is angry.

I can’t believe what a vile pig that woman is, having had nothing better to do than torture a little girl online. I could just picture that family giggling everyday, as Lori sat at her computer, she’s the one with no reason to live, she’s teaching her own little girl how to grow up and be a future vile pig, like herself.

Agreed that the Drews’ daughter (and any other children they might have) should be removed from her parents’ custody. Anyone who teaches their child to bully, then enlists the aid of other neighborhood children to help torment a child they know to be fragile, is obviously incapable of raising their child with the values it takes to be a productive human being in society. They’re guilty of warping not only their own child, but many other children (especially Megan, herself). Not only that, but Lori Drew admits that her interactions with Megan under the Josh Evans persona became sexually charged. She’s no better than any other pedophile trying to groom your 13 year-old daughter with the ultimate intent of causing harm for her own selfish pleasure. A child died as a direct result of her torment. To think that she could raise her own child unscathed is to bury our heads in the sand.

I had very mixed emotions reading your article yesterday, where you were not going to name the family. I have followed this story since I learned of it (from your site). I understand “protecting” the teenage daughter, BUT, in my opinion, that girl deserves no protection. She deserves harrassment ten-fold of the harrassment she and her family bestowed upon the Meiers family…I sinply can’t comprehend parents who lead their children by this sort of piss-poor example. At the VERY least they should have their daughter taken away from them…

Someone at DHS reading this should put them on a no-fly list. With their names and addresses so readily available now, Im certain someone has attempted to open lines of credit in their name. Then there are the unwanted magazine subscriptions, phony pizza and chinese food deliveries, and ultimately a car towing or two.

Without the Drews putting personal pin codes on their cable and electric accounts, any yahoo can call up and disconnect services or order pay per view porn. Water shutoff or gas shutoff would also be dastardly, but again, that is just a very common prank.

In the immortal words of Jerry Seinfeld, “Eh, that’s a shame”…while I don’t condone acts of vandalism, when you facilitate the suicide of a disturbed (but otherwise innocent) 13YO girl and encourage other people to join in, let’s just say that karma’s a bitch (just as much as Lori, LOL).

I’ve had several days to let my mind absorb this story, and I’m still having a problem wrapping my mind around it. Lori Drew is a selfish, petty woman with no soul. I mean, she has to be.

What other type of “adult” (using the term extremely loosely, here) would purposely and maliciously dupe, harass, and torment a CHILD of 13? I feel very strongly that there must be something that this horrible woman can be charged with. She should be punished.

If LE can do nothing than I hope her community has the moral strength to ostracize her.

Ms. Drew played directly on the sensitivities she knew would cause maximum damage to the Megan. Ms. Drew lured Megan in a way she knew would be most devastating to the child.

This wicked MOA Drew used is the exact methodology that a child predator employs to bait, lure and reel a child victim into doing their will. Child grooming was utilized over weeks and weeks to gain the child’s trust… and once trust was obtained, she exploited it into a relationship. (Another Child Predator Hallmark).

When Ms. Drew saw her bullets were hitting it’s mark, she turned up the heat. She invited others to partake in the sick, twisted mental assault on this child, keeping the pressure up. Even her business employee joined in the game.

Ms. Drew then delivered the final blow that many depressed 13 year old girls would crumble under.

She mentally raped the child and left her for dead. Better said, encouraged her for dead.

Ms. Drew remains smug and defiant about her actions – even seeks to attack this grieving family while their beloved daughter’s memory is fresh in their mind.

She has committed the unthinkable…. and doesn’t even acknowledge she abused this child.

Child Predators go to jail for their actions. Physical contact is not required for a conviction. Evidence of any kind of sexually charged grooming of a child by an adult is worthy of a charge of indecent liberties with a child…. or at the very least harassment.

If even assisted suicide is criminal intent, driving someone to it should at least qualify as something more heinous than an ordinary parking ticket.

I can’t get over this story.

Here’s some more food for thought…

Ok, the girls mom doesn’t admit to what she did was TERRIBLY wrong, &amp tries to defend herself by stating Megan was not nice.

Gee, is it any wonder that a 13 year old suffering from depression would not be nice?!

Supposedly, she flirted with boys, liked them one minute and not the next, AS IF ANY OF THAT type of NORMAL adolescent behaviour justifies persecuting a 13YO, when in fact, your own adolescent daughter wasn’t didn’t initiate the attack.

Lori Drew was more immature than her daughter, but given her years, and experience, think of the mental manipulation she was able to impose. No other 13YO would have been capable of such an attack.

Finally, Megan Meier was very over weight…

That’s a sheer sign of neglect, a kid puts on 10 extra pounds, and it’s time to start riding a bicylcle, taking a family aerobics class, or just doing exercise videos with your children. Beyond 10-15 lbs, means you flat out don’t give a rats ass if your kid dies of heart disease anyway.

She clearly had a chemical imbalance, several dozens of stored excess chemicals, she wasn’t hyper active, she was energetic, and likely couped up by her lazy minded parents.

What else would you do all day if you were couped up, and were energetic? You’d raid the fucking fridge for entertainment.

Shame on Megans mom for being so lazy at helping her daughter expel that kind of energy, and for allowing a doctor to put her on depression medication (which the rest of the world knows is just a sedative to get your kid to leave you alone).

Get a fucking physical hobby, Megan would have been better off, if she really was having sex with boys her age at 13, for the sheer sake of ACTIVITY.

No matter what a bitch ass lazy neighbor or parent has to say about it.

Don’t you think it was kind of lame that Megans mom had to “run out the door” over braces?! As if they’d gone anywere on their own, or as if the doctor could have waited the extra 5 minutes it took Megans mom to log her ass OFF, and make her come along to the dentists office for the ride…

Birindi Ana, I do find a lot of what you say good points other than saying a child’s obesity is an instant pointer to laziness on the child or the parents’ part right away. Kind of a fast stereotype. The child could have been a diabetic, for example, but we aren’t privy to that info because it isn’t our business. However, I am likely to agree that the mother is too lazy to carry some blame in making the law find fault with her for allowing her child to have a myspace page before the required age of 14. So, I think that if the wonderful little town of 7k is going to make such a wonderful little law or ordinance and start some hoopla because one little mommy decided her little kiddie could play on the computer and doesn’t want to take any responsibility when it SAID AGE 14 whether it would have made a difference or not, we should ask them to smack her hand some. As you said, she couldn’t wait the whole 5 minutes to get her kid to come along, or wait, myspace isn’t a chatroom so it wasn’t like it was ongoing so I guess she could have let the computer just stay logged on, or my gosh myspace isn’t the end all be all nor is the stinking computer and she could have just unplugged it for faster logging off if it was still a problem being logged in and all. My gosh, I believe I am rambling now in the insanity. Can these two mommies be locked up. One for just being a complete sick freak that would make Wacko Jacko look neat and the other because she shouldn’t be allowed to breed or spread the stupidity anymore? This little girl should have been outside in a town of 7k in 4-H, playing, after school, at church, or with mom and the other little girl should have been with her having fun. The two mommies should have met up when the friendship soured and the foozball table was still stored at the wrong house and had it removed or a sit down to resolve whatever the issue was. If Megan’s mommy spent so much time monitoring the internet conversations as she did the real life in the flesh ones maybe things could have been different. There are too many should haves, could haves, would haves, and I am just really sad a little innocent girl had to die over it all.

Birindi Ana, there are some facts of the situation you’re not taking into account. It’s an understandable ignorance. (I only hope the “Ana” part of your screenname doesn’t have more sinister implications, like being pro-anorexia. But the fat-phobia in your comment makes me wonder.)

Megan Meier, according to news reports, was taking anti-depressants. One common side effect of anti-depressants is weight gain. Coupled with the normal weight gain teenage girls experience at her age, it may be that Megan was larger than the stick-figure model type which so many teenage girls find worthy of emulation.

However, from the pictures I have seen, Megan was not in any sense “fat,” unless one already has a twisted and deformed sense of what a normal teenage female body looks like.

So before slinging comments about “laziness” and “neglect,” get a little more information.

As details about Lori Drew’s 6 week cyber-voyeur techniques emerge, I am more convinced that outing this kind of behavior is not only right, but essential. Essential? Really?

It is becoming clearer everyday that Lori Drew employed many of the same grooming techniques that child predators utilize to charm their way into gaining a child’s trust. The most significant key here is that Lori Drew spent approximately 6 full weeks baiting Megan into this trust by posing as a “cute” boy that Megan would be attracted to.

Right here, Drew utilizes the sexual stimulation that exists in male/female pair bonding in order to manipulate the 13 year old girl.

Lori Drew groomed her victim like many child predators do, enticing her with flirtation, mild sexual conversation and playing on Megan’s weakness. Lori knew that Megan had a low self esteem and was treated for depression.

There are uncanny parallels between the typical Child Predator MOA and those utilized by Lori Drew to control and manipulate Megan in the relationship Lori developed with her.

Outing Child Predators has been public policy in most states and is usually upheld under the premise that the public has a right to reasonably protect itself from criminal behavior where it exists. Families with children have a right to know when those who might prey upon their child, live nearby. Public policy dictates that if a child is exposed to potential harm from predatory activity, then parents should at least have the opportunity to be aware such harm may exist.

But what if a child predator confesses to a crime, but is never convicted? Does the potential for risk exist despite the legal process?

Thus far, details in the case have been heavily supported by Lori Drew’s own admissions, police records and interviews. The amount of speculation in this case has been minimal, and the majority of public outrage has largely focused on the facts presented.

The Missouri Public Records Act of 1961 was enacted partially to inform the public of persons, events, proceedings and reports that may effect the public directly. The records (such as the charges Lori Drew filed against the Meier family), were the principal documents used to tie Lori Drew to her abhorrent acts. By filing this police report, Lori in effect put herself into the spot light. The Blogging community simply connected the dots and reported the results.

The Vice enjoys the sharp irony that Lori Drew’s own actions, activities and zeal to hurt someone eventually lead to her own uncovering. As I see it, public policy laws and Lori Drew’s own manipulations of those laws worked to her undoing. The Vice is appreciative for Lori Drew’s assistance in these efforts.

Very well said, Danny…and to Stef, funny you should mention that whole “pro-ana” thing, as this case has similarities to an ep of Judging Amy I saw a few years back: a girl winds up in the hospital b/c of tips she recieved on a pro-ana site…initially remorseless when the case goes to trial, the site owner changes her tune after visiting the girl in the hospital and seeing just how bad she is…doing a 180, she tearfully promises to shut it down (more than I can say for that bitch Lori Drew), but the girl dies before she can do so and winds up being charged w/facilitating her murder, which is pretty much what Lori did as well.

On Wednesday, October 21st, city officials enacted an ordinance designed to address the public outcry for justice in the Megan Meier tragedy. The six member Board of Aldermen made Internet harassment a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail.

Does this new law provide any justice for Megan? Does this law provide equitable relief for a future victim or actually weaken the current law?

I reject the premise of this new law and believe it completely misses the mark. The reasoning behind this opinion is that city officials have consistently treated this case as an Internet harassment case instead of a child welfare/exploitation case.

Classifying this case a harassment issue completely fails to address the most serious aspects of the methods Lori Drew employed to lead this youth to her demise. The Vice disagrees that harassment was even a factor in this case until just a couple of days before Megan’s death.

Considering this case a harassment issue is incorrect because during the 5 weeks Lori Drew baited and groomed her victim, the attention was NOT unwanted attention. It was not harassment at all. It was invited attention. Megan participated in the conversations willingly because she was lured, manipulated and exploited without her knowledge.

This law willfully sets a precedent that future child exploiters and predators can use to reclassify their cases to harassment issues. In effect, the law enacted to give Megan justice, may make her even more vulnerable. So long as the child victim doesn’t tell the predator to stop, even a harassment charge may not stick with the right circumstances and a good defender.

Every aspect of this case follows the same procedural requirement used to convict a Child Predator. A child was manipulated by an adult. A child was engaged in sexually explicit conversation (as acknowledged by Lori Drew herself). An adult imposed her will on a child by misleading her, using a profile designed to sexually or intimately attract the 13 year old Megan.

Lori then utilized the power she had gained over this child to cause significant distress and endangerment to that child. She even stipulated to many of these activities in the police report she filed shortly after Megan’s death.

We can go on and on here, but the parallels between this case and many other child predator cases that are successfully prosecuted bear striking similarities.

Child Predator laws do not require much more than simply proving that an adult has engaged a minor in sexually explicit conversation. Lori Drew has already stipulated that her conversations with Megan were sometimes sexual for a child Megan’s age.

City officials who continue to ignore this viable, documented admission and continue to address this issue as harassment are intentionally burying their heads in the sand, when the solution is staring them right in the face. Why?

On June 5th, 2006, Governor Matt Blunt signed into law stiff penalties for convicted sex offenders. The Vice believes that officials continually reject a child predator classification of this case in order to keep the penalty of this offense out of this harsher realm.

Opponents of this law are active in defeating this law not by changing it, but by disqualifying cases like Megan’s from ever being heard.

There are several other child exploitation laws on the books. To date, none of them have even been considered by City, State and Federal officials in this case. I’m outraged that a motion was never even filed, so that the case could at least be argued before a judge or jury.

Those satisfied with this response out of Missouri officials need to think through the effect this law will truly have. It quite honestly has the potential to directly undermine Jessica’s law. It quiet easily gives prosecutors a way out of prosecuting child endangerment and child predator cases in the future.

Beware the wolf in sheep’s clothing here.

Lori Drew is a psychopath. That part is clear.

But more disturbing than that are the actions of authorities: If it had been an adult MALE that “carried on” in a sexually explicit way with a 13 year old girl, even if it WERE for the purposes of revenge for his teen daughter, he’d be locked up as a pedophile.

Second, there are al-READY laws on the books that cover this type of harassment. For chrissake: just implement them!

What is particularly chilling to me, is that Lori Drew knew that the victim was known to be suicidal in the past. That means that her statement to her that the “world would be better off without you” or whatever it was… is even MORE chilling: it means she was TRYING to steer this girl to suicide. It means she had a desire to push it in that direction, and did so.

Reminds me of Charles Manson. He never “technically” put his own hands upon his victims either, but he “made it happen” by manipulating people, I mean that’s the premise upon which he was convicted: that he had INCITED it.

Same thing here. Lori Drew incited this suicide and should be just as responsible as Manson was when he incited those murders—and she should also be treated just like any other adult who engages in online relationships of a sexual nature with under-aged children.
