Blog Readers Out Anonymous Adults that Newspaper Refused to Identify:

According to this article from Wired readers of some blogs, not this one, that read the story about Megan Meier have published the names of those responsible for her suicide.

The St. Charles Journal wrote in the story that it decided not to name the woman and the other adult involved in the incident out of concern for the woman’s own teenage daughter. The two adults haven’t been charged with any crime.

But readers of various blogs that posted the story were furious with the paper’s decision. By matching certain details in the article with property records, they found the name and address of a woman who they believe created the Josh Evans persona, and published her details online.

Was the paper right to protect the woman’s identity? Were the bloggers right to publish a name and address that may or may not be correct?

Even though I think the people involved with Megan’s death are scumbags and I hope eventually they are prosecuted and sent away for a long time this is nothing more than a blatant case of vigilantism. I also want to add that I will not post their names here.

Let the law do it’s job people. By publishing their names you’re jeopardizing the chances of justice being served.

    I don’t see how publishing their names would prevent justice from being served. The tormentors in this incident also have the recourse of the court system. If they don’t like what a blogger said about them, perhaps they should get a lawyer and sue the blogger, which, much like the tormentors, in the eyes of the law, have done nothing wrong.

    I love it that the shoe is on the other foot. In this case, Trench, I’m with the vigilantes.

    I am still trying to figure out why no charges can be brought? I thought there were laws for online bullying?
    Is this not a case of that?
    I know many States Attorneys are still way behind regarding internet crime. Is it a case of that?
    Is it just that the laws that limited in what they cover?
    I hope this case will help fix whichever it is.

    I know I am usually the first to post where were the parents. This case by all reports was a situation where parents were actually doing their job. Which as a responsible, and aware parent really makes me think just how safe are my kids. Not that mine will be on MySpace even with me in there with them. Just not happening.

    I SEEN THE STORY ON TV FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST NIGHT AND I WOKE UP THINKING ABOUT IT. I HOPE THE MOTHER DOESNT STILL HAVE CUSTODY OF HER CHILD. HOW MANY CHILDREN DO THEY HAVE TO PUSH TO THE EDGE BEFORE JUSTICE IS FOUND?? I FEEL IF THEY WONT BE CHARGED THEN THEIR NAMES NEED TO BE PUBLIC. PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW WHO IS DAMAGING THEIR KIDS, THERE MIGHT BE MORE. THEY COULD BE ONLINE RIGHT NOW STEALING YOUR SONS OR DAUGHTERS TRUST, JUST TO PUSH THEM TO THE EDGE. IS THERE ANYTHING “WE” CAN DO TO SEE THAT THESE SICK PEOPLE ARE MADE TO PAY FOR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE?

    Not everyone wants to know the names of these people to exert vigilante justice. Don’t you think people have a right to know this about someone if they move in? I would expect it likely these people will need to move. If you had a teen-age daughter, how would you like it if they moved in next door to you and you did not know about this? Wouldn’t you want to keep your daughter away from them? It gives me the creeps to think of them being next door and not knowing and my daughter – or anyone’s daughter – getting friendly with them. That is why people have the right to know. JMHO.

    Yes I am a male but correct me if I’m wrong the parents of the other girl were responsible for this. As far as I know, and I do, the parents in this case entail a man and a woman.

    And did you notice that the Meiers have chosen themselves not to identify the harassers? If I print their names I would be guilty if just about the same transgression they’ve committed.

    By the way if you’re trying to make me feel guilty or hurt my feelings you’re going to have to try a lot harder than that.

    What you fail to understand is that not everyone get’s the justice they deserve until public pressure forces them to do things right.

    Even the attorneys in the case told this family to stay quiet while the case was being investigated.

    Well, being quiet rarely works…

    The child predator who lured, manipulated and exploited this child not only is running around unabated, she refuses to apologize for her actions and has instead filed a lawsuite against the grieving family.

    This kind of heinous behavior has been swept under the rug long enough…

    This was mental and emotional abuse of and adult on a child…

    A child the adult knew was being medicated for depression.

    and so far, a speeding ticket is far worse in the law’s eyes than what this adult did to this child.

    The only fools who think this kind of behavior should be ignored and forgotten are the same fools who molest their children and then tell THEM to shut up and be quiet.

    Absolutely not.

    I refuse….. and many others refuse.

    There is no excuse for this…and absolutely no reason why this woman shouldn’t endure the shame that she deserves for her horrific actions.

    What makes these people special that their name isn’t mentioned? We get to know the names of pedophiles and rapists. If these scum move next to me, I want to know about like I would a pedophile. For her be concerned about you is one thing, for her to role play being a boy Megan’s age and lead her to believe she had a “boyfriend” and then dump on her the way she did was wrong. It also showed that she can be mean and petty. No, I’m sure she didn’t want what happened to occur, but the simple fact is, SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ADULT!! She IS responsible for her actions.     First off, I’m shocked and sickened by this behavior, more so considering it came from a grown woman who should be above all this pre-teen drama bullshit…Megan seemed like a sweet girl who had to deal w/probs (don’t we all, especially @ that age?) and didn’t deserve to be pushed over the edge like that. May she RIP.

    The Meiers were charged with the lawn job and also property damage (game table). It didn’t all happen recently, just the call.

    Megan had been on vacations with the neighbors. They were trusted friends of the family and knew she was seeing a counselor and on meds for depression and ADD. They knew she was fragile.

    They have 2 lawsuits against the Meiers. Their gall and utter lack of remorse is appalling. They advertise for scores of small business owners. They are members of the local Chamber of Commerce. They are successful in real estate.

    If they demonstrated remorse, or had the grace to move away from the neighbors they hurt so deeply, there might be a small measure of peace. But no, they just want everyone to drop it. They feel they have done nothing wrong. If the County Police had put her in jail, even overnight, even 83 minutes. But No Justice Prevails.

    This has exasperated me like no other story has. The more details that are revealed, the more horrendous it gets.

    For those of you who feel powerless against this injustice, please read. You are not powerless.. Public pressure CAN result in the proper handling of this case as it has many times before.

    Example:

    About a month ago, a child nearly drowned in the family swimming pool. The child was pulled inside the house to try to recessitate the child.

    A cop who showed up after paramedics arrived, ran into the house and slipped on the wet floor. A floor wet, because the child was soaking wet.

    After the cop received full pay for her workman’s comp claim…and after all of the cops medical bills were paid….this cop proceeded to sue the family of the boy who is now a vegitable.

    Public outrage and anger lead to the cop’s suspension from the force…and the cop was finally forced to repeal her case.

    Had this story been covered up and hidden, this cop would have gone forward and sued this grieving family while their child was still in intensive care.

    See… you do have a voice… public pressure can give a victim a small amount of justice.

    Megan Meier deserves at least a little justice in all this – not just some new law named after her.

    If you feel the adult child predator in this case should bear some kind of responsibility to her part in this, then make sure your voice is heard.

    Ms Drew could set this up on your child next…

    Even if you watch your child like a hawk….remember the following.

    Your child’s friends have computers.

    Your child’s school has computers…

    Libraries have computers…

    If your child desperately desires to get to a computer, they will find one eventually…

    And Ms. Drew, and others like her are waiting.

    Justice deserves to prevail here…and so far it has NOT!

    If so I Pray to heck they find something.

    As far as the Fat comments get a grip and grow up. The pictures I have seen of Megan showed a pretty young lady and nothing more. True she may have have some of the attributes that Anonymous listed as a child in school. We know she was struggling with self image issues. We know people with limited sel images seek out many time the wrong way the approval they seek. That in No way makes it OK for a Adult to take it to this level. It does not even make it right for another child to do it. We expect it from them many times since they have limited maturity, and can in fact be downright nasty little buggers when not brought up properly.
    No one No matter what deserves to go through this torment, and be left to feel they do not wish to live.

    We are ALL here for a reason in life. Many never find that reason, but they keep seeking it. The important thing is not to give up the search no matter how hard it seems sometime.

    There is a charge of harassment, making fun of someone is harassment. They should be charged with harassment in the second degree a class A misdeamor punishable by up to 1 year in jail, easy to pruve and then can lead to bigger charges, if you commit a cime and someone dies whether or not you were involved in their death the law says that you are guilty of murder in the second degree depraved and indifference to human life. Now to pruve that what they did was wrong and their criminal actions of harassment caused this will be very hard.

    I think we’re overlooking the fact that this was not supposed to push her even remotely close to the edge.

    I may be automatically rejected by you guys, or better yet insulted beyond belief, but suicide is selfish. We can’t be mad at the Drew family for acting in revenge. No doubt they went too far with the whole MySpace fake account and whatnot, but it is a little ridiculous that you can blame them for the suicide.

    As I stated, suicide is completely selfish. To give up your life while some people are “vegetables” in hospitals, or have malignant cancer and you decide your suburban, mom-and-dad-loving life is so horrible that you have to kill yourself is beyond my comprehension.

    No one, other than Megan, is to blame for her suicide.

    In the words of most teachers at my education facility, “No one MADE [her] do it.”

    I rest my case.

    As far as the daughter of the Drew’s being online posting to blogs we know this is not her posting here. I just do not think that and I know I am giving more credit then is due but I doubt after all this they are allowing their child on the internet for fear someone would target her in the same manner in retaliation. Yes, I know that would take one sick individual but well we have Just those types folks in this world. .
    Have the Drew’s even spoken online? Do their myspace profiles the real ones show any recent activity or log ins?
    You would think the internet would be last place any of them would wish to be. Than again you would also think they would say I am sorry Show remorse and of course never have done this so again I may be giving them way too much credit on this.

    On Wednesday, October 21st, city officials enacted an ordinance designed to address the public outcry for justice in the Megan Meier tragedy. The six member Board of Aldermen made Internet harassment a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail.

    Does this new law provide any justice for Megan? Does this law provide equitable relief for a future victim or actually weaken the current law?

    I reject the premise of this new law and believe it completely misses the mark. The reasoning behind this opinion is that city officials have consistently treated this case as an Internet harassment case instead of a child welfare/exploitation case.

    Classifying this case a harassment issue completely fails to address the most serious aspects of the methods Lori Drew employed to lead this youth to her demise. The Vice disagrees that harassment was even a factor in this case until just a couple of days before Megan’s death.

    Considering this case a harassment issue is incorrect because during the 5 weeks Lori Drew baited and groomed her victim, the attention was NOT unwanted attention. It was not harassment at all. It was invited attention. Megan participated in the conversations willingly because she was lured, manipulated and exploited without her knowledge.

    This law willfully sets a precedent that future child exploiters and predators can use to reclassify their cases to harassment issues. In effect, the law enacted to give Megan justice, may make her even more vulnerable. So long as the child victim doesn’t tell the predator to stop, even a harassment charge may not stick with the right circumstances and a good defender.

    Every aspect of this case follows the same procedural requirement used to convict a Child Predator. A child was manipulated by an adult. A child was engaged in sexually explicit conversation (as acknowledged by Lori Drew herself). An adult imposed her will on a child by misleading her, using a profile designed to sexually or intimately attract the 13 year old Megan.

    Lori then utilized the power she had gained over this child to cause significant distress and endangerment to that child. She even stipulated to many of these activities in the police report she filed shortly after Megan’s death.

    We can go on and on here, but the parallels between this case and many other child predator cases that are successfully prosecuted bear striking similarities.

    Child Predator laws do not require much more than simply proving that an adult has engaged a minor in sexually explicit conversation. Lori Drew has already stipulated that her conversations with Megan were sometimes sexual for a child Megan’s age.

    City officials who continue to ignore this viable, documented admission and continue to address this issue as harassment are intentionally burying their heads in the sand, when the solution is staring them right in the face. Why?

    On June 5th, 2006, Governor Matt Blunt signed into law stiff penalties for convicted sex offenders. The Vice believes that officials continually reject a child predator classification of this case in order to keep the penalty of this offense out of this harsher realm.

    Opponents of this law are active in defeating this law not by changing it, but by disqualifying cases like Megan’s from ever being heard.

    There are several other child exploitation laws on the books. To date, none of them have even been considered by City, State and Federal officials in this case. I’m outraged that a motion was never even filed, so that the case could at least be argued before a judge or jury.

    Those satisfied with this response out of Missouri officials need to think through the effect this law will truly have. It quite honestly has the potential to directly undermine Jessica’s law. It quiet easily gives prosecutors a way out of prosecuting child endangerment and child predator cases in the future.

    Beware the wolf in sheep’s clothing here.

    Adults who deliberately stalk and manipulate vulnerable teenaged girls are beneath contempt, and if this had been a man doing it and he had tried to get her to go on a date with him, the world would be screaming bloody blue murder. When it’s a woman, and all she did was knowingly push a mentally unstable child to suicide, well, then people actually DEFEND her? Like it was all OKAY? She bullied an unstable child to death, but because the child was unstable, it’s just FINE?!

    One day, karma will pay a visit to Lori and her entire family, and I hope it bites down HARD. They may be feeling the heat now, but what goes around does come around, and when it comes around, it’s gonna be a doozy. I hope it makes international news when it happens.
