Letavec sentenced

Man sentenced to 10 years for assaulting girl he met on MySpace:

One of the first predators ever mentioned on this site, Stephen Letavec, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for molesting a 14-year-old girl.

To refresh your memory Letavec was a married father of two in his 40’s who traveled from Elrama, Pa. to Connecticut to have sex with the 14-year-old girl three times. Two of those times they engaged in sex. She told Letavec she was 18 but eventually told him her true age before Letavec ever met her in person. Let the creepiness commence…

“I showed you what love is and how it feels,” Letavec wrote in an e-mail found in the girl’s school locker, according to an FBI report. “I want to show you how making love feels too, not just sex because there is a difference.”

After Letavec gets out he will have 10 years of supervised release. Considering he was looking at a max of 60 years he should consider himself very lucky.

My opinion is that 10 years is not enough even though the U.S. Attorney’s office disagrees…

“This sentence should send a very strong message to anyone who intends to use the Internet to prey on children,” U.S. Attorney Kevin OConnor said Monday.

Who knows if there were any other girls before this one? 10 years may be a strong message. 60 years would have been a lot stronger.

The sad thing is in so many cases with pedophiles like this, the urge to have sex is stronger than any sentence they might receive. That is why they have to be locked up for as long as possible.

I wonder if those who convicted him realize that there will STILL be 14-year-old girls on MySpace when this monster is released? That’s why a VERY long sentence would be a lot more suitable for his crime.

At the same time… this girl seemed to desire the act and did nothing to prevent it. I’m not saying what he did was right, but c’mon, 14 year olds should know better than that. 10 years is plenty.

She sounds like she has problems herself and I read a previous article where the mother approved of the relationship. The law is in their court and they are nailing this guy to the cross. He has lost everything. He made a stupid mistake that’s all. Now she and her family will forever use this incident to excuse all of her f’ups –when it probably has more to do with them and how they are raising her. Where were the parents when he came up to visit, or when she was giving him head in his SUV? A most common practice by the way of many school girls in her age range. To them it’s like sucking on an ice-cream cone. If my 14 year old is not within my supervision, then you better believe I’m going to go looking for her. As well as watching what she is doing on the internet, TV and radio and with her friends! 14 years old’s are not that innocent, trust me. It’s not right either way. The law is too severe in cases such as this and this should have been taken care of first at the family level, then in a family court. This isn’t rape, kidnap or any type of violence. This is extremely poor judgment, like we all make in our lives. If he had been a Kennedy, or Michael Jackson, then he’d be free. The laws will need to be changed as these types of cases start clogging up the courts. As long as you have different sexes living on this planet, it’s going to keep happening.

I believe that 10 years was not enough for this crime. Regardless if the girl knew what she was doing was wrong he still should have had the common decency not to have sexual intercourse with her, regardless if she said she was 18 or not. I do agree with Susan that the parents should have been in the picture and in the child face 24/7. Children younger than 8 are out here being exposed to this crime each and everyday so no child is as innocent as they look and i feel that every parent should find out what their child is doing at all time whether their with friends, at school, or on the computer, because there are always going to be a child molestation case some where. Its the parents job around the U.S to stop this crime and put a plan into action.
