Additional charges filed in Memorial Middle shooting

White hearing postponed again:

Thomas White, the 14-year-old gunman in the Memorial Middle School shooting, has had a preliminary hearing postponed because prosecutors have filed additional charges.

Jasper County Assistant Prosecutor Todd Hawkins said after reviewing police records, the prosecutor’s office filed two additional charges against White Monday afternoon – a second first degree assault charge and a felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

No word on how much that could potentially add to his sentence.

It took you an hour and a half to respond. You’re slowing down.Anyway, 50 years for attempted murder extreme? Not really. Sounds about right to me.

5-15 year for each count plus 5-15 for the first assult then I believe max. 5 for terrorist threat and minor penalty (after all that anyway) for the attempted escape. 50 years… even you must admit that is a bit extreme. But also interesting to note is that they are challenging the constitutionality of trying a kid as an adult. Can you imagine if what would happen to this site if that was to happen? By the ruling of executing minors it left the possibility wide open that this will pass.

Refresh my memory on what those grounds are.

Don’t hold your breath on that one. They challenged the constitutionality of the insanity laws in Minnesota to try and get John Jason McLaughlin out of his adult sentence. That didn’t work either.

The ruling on giving minors the death penalty, from my understanding mind you, basically said there minds were too undeveloped to understand the full consquences of their actions. While it has yet to been interpreted that they don’t understand the the consquences enough to be tried as an adult it certainly left the window wide open for it.And of course you aren’t for executing White, you want to see him suffer a long painful death in jail, what a humanitarian.

A little submit button happy are we?Would it be better if he was executed?

I don’t think executing him would be best but I don’t think sentencing him to what very well could be life (63 years is getting up there in age) should even be an option.

So what do you think the sentence should be?

I actually think this is a good spot for the dual juristiction program, I just think that program needs work. As it is now it is just a glorified 3 strike program with these being your first 2 strikes. And if you don’t behave yourself your first 7 years (in Thomas’ case, sometimes less) you end up serving 30 or 40 thats not right to me.In other words I think he should be housed until he is no longer a threat to society. Given a proper education so he can do whatever he wants on the outside. Too many programs like this seem to be all about getting your GED as soon as you get out and learning how to be a labor worker. I also think he should get a clean record when he gets out so he can take advantage of that education.Any chance I can talk you down from your slow and painful death behind death that you seem to want for him?

What makes you think I want him dead? He didn’t kill anybody. However he does need to serve his time. I have no problem with spending his time in a juvenile facility until he turns 18. If his sentence is longer than that then he goes to adult prison.

You basically have said you think he should die (or at least become elderly) in jail. So what I am wondering is if you insist on him serving past his 18th or 21st birthday, the cutoffs of the dual juristiction program.

In my opinion he committed attempted murder which carries a 30 year sentence in Missouri I believe. I’d be happy with that.
