Another doctor’s opinion on Asperger’s

I had asked another blogging doctor about Asperger’s as a murder defense in the case of John Odgren. I e-mailed Dr. Feste of Illyria and this is what he had to say. Again, nothing has been edited…

One would think that a 16-year-old with such a diagnosis would not be allowed to have a knife collection; obviously parents have poor insight into the problem…. oftentimes the parents have just as many issues. If I were the supreme authority on truth, justice and all things imperial (I should be provided with such responsibilities), I would not incarcerate the individual, since the explosive outbursts are a consequence of his disease, but I would not let him roam free, especially with such parents….. it seems a good chunk of modern society is incapable of reasonable parenting, and thus the murderous 16-year-old should be under constant supervision and a controlled environment until there is proof that he will not repeat his offense. Parents need a good whack in the head, though.

I agree with that opinion too, though he doesn’t seem to realize that aspies frequently have outbursts when they are younger and get over them with age. So I wonder if he means he needs constant supervision now or constant supervision forever. I am all for constant supervision for now, heck for quite some time.

Though I would like him to get out of that A) period, B) within a time frame that will allow him to make something of himself (yes I know James doesn’t get that and that is tragic but I don’t know what to say…) and C) with a mostly clean slate so he can get a job and stuff. Just my 2 cents, thanks for these doctor opinions they seem to be quite nice to Jack assuming he meant what I think he meant.

That site has another article that has a family talk about how their son can get violent if pushed too it (sometimes very lightly).

Unfortunately, total ignorance and a complete lack of facts never stops idiots from posing as experts. What on God’s earth makes the blogger think that a mentally ill kid saying he has a knife collection, a statement, mind you, that is based only on some reporter’s attempt to sensationalize a tragedy, means he actually had one? What on God’d earth makes the blogger think that there were any signs or even a hint of something this horrific was present in the kid’s past or on his mind? Do you really think for an instant that people would intentionally put a kid with lethal tendencies into a situation where some innocent kid would be at risk? Shame on you all for wasting your time beleaguering this tragic situation and pointing fingers of blame at families and educators who are shattered by this tragedy. May you all struggle some day with a family member of your own with mental illness or with any disability.
