A while back, a reader recommended I see the movie Home Room.

I just finally got around to watching it. It’s about the aftermath of a fictional school shooting. Without going into too much of the story, I thought it was a great movie.

On the surface, it looks like a movie made for teens, but this is something that parents with school-age kids should definitely watch just for the last 20 minutes of the movie alone.

It was a little too Breakfast Club for me overall, but it was much better than the bore fest that was Elephant.

My recommendation would have been “Bang Bang You’re Dead”. A movie that started out life as a play by William Mastrosimone and moves way beyond the boorish and Breakfast Clubish feel of Home Room and Elephant. Curriculums here in Australia are finding “Bang Bang You’re Dead” (in both movie and play form) a useful educational addition.

I’ve seen Elephant, and I totally disagree with claims of it being boorish…admittedly I haven’t seen Home Room, Bang Bang You’re Dead, or any other school shooting movies, but Elephant takes such an unconventional, detached view of the whole situation. It showed the apparent calm and monotony of school life, which further emphasised, and questioned, the horrifying violence which was to take place in only a matter of hours. I thought it was an absolutely amazing piece of work, and there’s not one thing I would change about it. Yes, some of the single shots were long to our standards, but not excessive…because in real life, we don’t just jump from point of interest to point of interest there ARE moments that seem to drag on forever. And this just brought more realism and understanding to the movie.

Just because it didn’t end with you feeling satisfied and a better person for watching it, doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. It accomplished it’s goal. The people who were closely related with the incident will always feel a sense of emptiness over it, Elephant allowed us, for a short moment in time, to be able feel something remotely similar to those involved…without the glamourisation of Hollywood, or the fictional suspense of an eager script writer. If you didn’t understand this, then the movie will have no effect on you…but for those who do…they witnessed something few other movies could ever capture.

Yep…that’s my rant. I regard Elephant very highly, if you didn’t notice, heh. I like this blog- I’ve been reading it for quite some time without comment, and I agree with alot you have to say, Trench.

very “breakfast club”-ish…or as someone on netflix said, the breakfast club if it were a lifetime movie.
veeeeeeeeery slow, but at least i could finish it, which is more than i could say for Elephant.

it was an okay movie, but i think as far as the whole school shooting thing goes, “Bang Bang, You’re Dead” touched on it a little more thoroughly.

watch zero day (not the doco zero hour)its the most realistic film ever made its fucked up to an extent that you think it is real. dont read the back cover just watch it i promise it will hount you

Dude… I can understand a typo, they happen. But “Hount” ??? The “O” and “A” keys are on opposite sides of the keyboard. 🙄
