    Letavec sentenced

Man sentenced to 10 years for assaulting girl he met on MySpace:

One of the first predators ever mentioned on this site, Stephen Letavec, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for molesting a 14-year-old girl.

To refresh your memory, Letavec was a married father of two in his 40s who traveled from Elrama, Pa. to Connecticut to have sex with the 14-year-old girl three times.

Two of those times they engaged in sex. She told Letavec she was 18, but eventually told him her true age before Letavec ever met her in person. Let the creepiness commence…

“I showed you what love is and how it feels,” Letavec wrote in an e-mail found in the girl’s school locker, according to an FBI report. “I want to show you how making love feels too, not just sex because there is a difference.”

After Letavec gets out, he will have 10 years of supervised release. Considering he was looking at a max of 60 years, he should consider himself very lucky.

My opinion is that 10 years is not enough, even though the U.S. Attorney’s office disagrees…

“This sentence should send a very strong message to anyone who intends to use the Internet to prey on children,” U.S. Attorney Kevin OConnor said Monday.

Who knows if there were any other girls before this one? 10 years may be a strong message. 60 years would have been a lot stronger.

  • Conn. proposes new legislation

    Conn. proposes new legislation

Blumenthal, lawmakers want age verification rules for MySpace.com:

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has unveiled some proposed legislation in regard to age verification on MySpace.

Under the proposal, any networking site that fails to verify ages and obtain parental permission from parents to post profiles of users under 18 would face civil fines up to $5,000 per violation. Sites would have to check information about parents to make sure it is legitimate. Parents would be contacted directly when necessary.

It would probably just be cheaper for the sites to take the $5K fine, then have to verify the parental information for every user under 18. And what about parents who don’t want their personal information online?

Speaking of parents, there’s still no proposed legislation in Conn. for lax parenting.

    Sonny Szeto sentenced

Man who used MySpace to meet underage girl sentenced to 14 years:

One of the first MySpace cases I ever posted about was the arrest of Sonny Szeto.

He traveled from Jersey City to Connecticut and assaulted an 11-year-old girl he met on MySpace in her playroom while her parents were asleep.

Yesterday, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Nowhere near long enough if you ask me.

Conn. Attorney General blows more hot air at MySpace

Attorney General Calls MySpace Sex Offender Registry “False Security Blanket,” Renews Call For Age Verification:

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has issued the following press release in regard to MySpace donating a sex offender database to the NCMEC.

“MySpace’s sex offender data base is a false security blanket that ignores and distracts from the real problem – sexual predators not yet caught and convicted trolling for victims. This data base does nothing to protect children from sexual predators still eluding criminal authorities or who lie about their ages and identities while using MySpace. A data base may actually create a false sense of security and comfort that the site is free from predators.

“Protecting children is too important for MySpace to continue taking feel-good baby steps. Without age verification, the problems will continue. Age verification is a must.

“Age verification will help protect kids from the towering danger of sexual predators and inappropriate material on MySpace. The web site and its parent company need to stop making excuses and introduce age verification, as well as raise its minimum age to 16.

“Age verification for users 18 and older using publicly available data is easy and effective. MySpace can confirm the ages of younger users by requiring information from a parent or guardian.

“Our coalition of states continues to grow, reaching 39 last week. I will continue to help lead this powerful and growing coalition in pressing MySpace to introduce age verification. We will consider every available option, including possible legal action, if the site continues to resist age verification.”

I still don’t hear him offering any real solutions.

He can form as many coalitions and make as many calls for age verification he wants. Any form of age verification out on the internet today can be circumvented.

Is he going to propose any legal action against lax parents who leave their kids roam the internet unattended?

Instead of going after MySpace maybe he needs to keep the myriad of sex offenders from The Constitution State behind bars to keep them from reoffending. Just do a search on this site for Scott Shefelbine or David Leonard to see what I mean.

Mr. Blumenthal, stop being a politician and be a prosecutor.

    Letavec pleads guilty

Man pleads guilty to assaulting girl he met on MySpace.com:

One of the first sexual predators ever mentioned on this site, Stephen M. Letavec, has pleaded guilty in Connecticut to one count of using the Internet to persuade a minor to engage in sexual activity and one count of traveling in interstate commerce for the purpose of attempting to have and having illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

If you recall, Letavec, at the time of his arrest, was a 39-year-old father of two from Elrama, Pennsylvania who met a 14-year-old Connecticut girl through MySpace and traveled to Conn. to have sex with her. The girl said on her MySpace that she was 18, but later told Letavec that she was 14 prior to his visit. That scores high on the big ol’ ‘Eww’ scale. Further child molester creepiness…

“I showed you what love is and how it feels,” Letavec wrote in an e-mail found in the girl’s school locker, according to an FBI report. “I want to show you how making love feels too, not just sex because there is a difference.”

I feel like I need a shower just after copying and pasting that.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 9th, and he’s looking at a max of 60 years.

  • Scott Shefelbine arrested yet again

    Scott Shefelbine arrested yet again

    Sex Suspect Faces New Charges:

I couldn’t make this one up if I wanted to.

One of our most notorious predators profiled here has been arrested yet again. Scott Shefelbine was arrested again this past Tuesday on eleven, that’s 11, XI, um…eleven-o, new charges…ah ah ah ah ah. *lightning strikes* Ahem.

For those of you that haven’t had the displeasure of reading about Mr. Shefelbine’s past transgressions click here. This time he’s been charged with five counts of first-degree sexual assault, three counts of illegal sale of liquor to a minor, attempt to commit first-degree sexual assault, kidnapping and unlawful restraint, and a partridge in a pear tree.

To make matters worse, he’s out…AGAIN!!! So far, he’s posted $1M in bail, this time it’s $250K. Or should I say his family has posted his bail…

Shefelbine, whose family operates a computer business, posted the new bail Tuesday. His next court appearance on the new charges is Jan. 26.

Two questions here. Why doesn’t the court hold him without bail? I mean, he’s shown he’s a definite risk to re-offend. Secondly, why does his family keep paying his bail? Fool me once and all that. They’ll be lucky if they don’t lose their business.

And to make two points that I’ve made before, at least he hasn’t been arrested as many times as Connecticut’s other serial molester, David Leonard. And for a state that is so down on MySpace, they sure have trouble keeping predators off the street.

Thanks to Robin for the link.

  • Scott Shefelbine arrested again

    Scott Shefelbine arrested again

    Scott Shefelbine

    Sex-Assault Suspect Faces More Charges:

“Alleged” child rapist Scott Shefelbine from Connecticut has been arrested again. You can read about all his exploits here.

TOLLAND — Scott D. Shefelbine was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly preying on another teenage girl for sex.

This time, the 31-year-old Tolland man was charged with restraining and attempting to rape a 15-year-old girl in the parking lot of Tolland High School. State police from Troop C served Shefelbine with a warrant Wednesday night charging him with criminal attempt at first-degree sexual assault, second-degree unlawful restraint, third-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. Police did not say when the incident took place.

Shefelbine, of 167 Mountain Spring Road, was already facing multiple charges of sexually assaulting young teenage girls, some of whom he met on Myspace.com, a social networking website that is popular with teenagers. Prior to his arrest Wednesday, he was free on $1 million bail posted by his parents, who run a computer business from their home.

He is now accused of assaulting at least seven girls. One of those, from West Hartford, told police that she had sexual contact with Shefelbine on numerous occasions, including at least once when she lived in Tolland before she turned 16.

In court documents, the accused is described as portraying himself as age 17 or 19 to teenage girls and their parents. Police searching his home have recovered hair pieces that investigators say he used to hide his receding hairline and bald spot.

According to this article, Shefelbine posted bond and was released. So now this scumbag is back out on the streets.

What I find strange is that Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has repeatedly called for MySpace to make their site safer for children, yet the state can’t keep repeat offenders like Shefelbine and David Leonard off the streets.

  • David Leonard arrested again, and again, and again

David Leonard arrested again, and again, and again

Vernon man charged again with MySpace sex assault:

David Leonard, our favorite Connecticut child molester, has been arrested AGAIN!!! You can check out just some of his earlier exploits here and here.

NEW BRITAIN – A Vernon man was served with an arrest warrant Monday morning for another sexual-assault charge stemming from his use of the profile Web site MySpace.com

The man, David Leonard, 22, was charged with second-degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor, employing a minor in an obscene gesture, promoting a minor in an obscene performance, and enticing a minor, according to the New Britain Herald.

The incident took place in 2004 in New Britain, and involved a 14-year-old girl, New Britain police Sgt. Gregory Wright said.

Leonard, a former Central Connecticut State University student, was first arrested on Jan. 30 on charges of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old Vernon girl he met through MySpace.

Leonard was arrested a second time and accused of fondling a 12-year-old Newington girl and her friend of the same age in a wooded area.

Leonard was arrested a third time on June 16, accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in New Britain, and was arrested for the fourth time in early August and charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Wethersfield.

In October, a Superior Court judge signed a fifth arrest warrant against Leonard.

After the last arrest in October, Assistant State’s Attorney Louis Luba told the Herald that police are expecting to arrest Leonard again on allegations of sexual assault against minors in Torrington and Vernon.

Leonard also was arrested recently on a warrant out of Litchfield County, Luba told The Herald.

Luba added that this would bring the total number of suspected cases to around 10.

In addition to the sexual assault charges, Leonard has pending charges for carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle, failure to appear, and resisting arrest after police said he tried to run away from them when they came to his house in January.

How many times does a child molester have to be arrested before they stop arresting him and just put him in jail?

  • Harry Denney

    Harry Denney

Police say Bethel man met teen on MySpace:

Yet even another MySpace creeper from Connecticut. Is it something in the water?

BETHEL — The 46-year-old Bethel man charged with attempted sexual assault after police found him in a parked car with a 15-year-old girl last week met the teen on MySpace.com, police said.

Bethel Police Chief Jeffrey Finch said Monday that Harry Denney, of Rockwell Drive, met the underage girl on the popular social networking Web site about a year ago.

He wouldn’t say if Denney and the teen had contact prior to the meeting that resulted in Denney’s arrest in the high school parking lot Friday.

Officers who were patrolling the lot during a football game between Bethel and New Milford found the pair in a “suspicious vehicle” parked in a rear corner of the lot. Finch wouldn’t say what attracted attention to the car.

In addition to the sexual assault count, Denney was charged with risk of injury to a minor and loitering on school grounds. He was released on $10,000 bond for an appearance Nov. 14 in Danbury Superior Court.

The age difference between them is almost my age.

I was unable to find Denney’s MySpace. Hopefully, a tipster will provide.

Another victim of Shefelbine comes forward

Another teen girl comes forward in MySpace assault case:

Another victim of scumbag rapist Scott Shefelbine has come forward…

The latest girl to come forward about her relationship with Scott D. Shefelbine claims the last time they were together, the 31-year-old Tolland man and former Ellington High School teacher’s aide physically forced her to have sexual relations with him, according to an affidavit supporting his arrest.

Shefelbine already is facing charges he sexually assaulted several other girls he met on MySpace.com.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, the girl’s father called West Hartford police Oct. 10 to say he’d just seen a television news report about a sexual predator using MySpace to lure young girls, and recognized Shefelbine from his mug shot as the boy dating his 16-year-old daughter.

The father told police that Shefelbine had claimed to be 17 and had been to his house about 10 times, the affidavit says. He said he had asked Shefelbine to verify his age, but no identification ever was produced, according to the affidavit.

After the father’s report police interviewed the girl, who said she’d met Shefelbine in late August in an online chat room. Initially, she voluntarily performed a sex act on him whenever they were together, the affidavit says, but the last time they were together, she refused and Shefelbine forced her.

According to court documents, Shefelbine and the girl would communicate through instant messages on the computer, and he was able to obtain the girl’s cell phone number from her away message box.

He called her, they chatted for an hour, and a few days later, on Aug. 25, he picked her up and drove her to his Tolland home, the affidavit says.

While there they watched a movie and, according to the affidavit, Shefelbine gave the girl three bottles of raspberry-flavored vodka before suggesting “out of the blue” that she perform a sex act upon him.

At first she said no and went outside to smoke a cigarette, but when she came back she found Shefelbine on the couch waiting for her expectantly, the affidavit states.

The girl told police she complied then, and during each subsequent visit until their last meeting on Columbus Day.

Shefelbine called her from the car on his way to her house and asked her to have sexual relations with him, the affidavit states, but she repeatedly told him no. When he got to the house, however, he physically forced her, the document states.

The girl told police she didn’t want to comply, “but she did not know what else to do.”

Shefelbine first was arrested on Oct. 10 by the Vernon Police Department on charges that he sexually assaulted four teenage girls.

In those cases, police say Shefelbine used the Web site MySpace.com to meet teenage girls and their friends posing as a 17- to 19-year-old boy, using a hairpiece to hide his balding head.
