The latest MySpace lawsuit

MySpace.com, News Corp. sued in assault cases:

I’m surprised that this isn’t happening more often. Anyway, MySpace and its parent company News Corp. are being sued by families from New York, Texas, Pennsylvania and South Carolina who had children that were sexually assaulted by MySpace users. The suit alleges MySpace of negligence, recklessness, fraud, and negligent misrepresentation.

Call me callous if you want but as far as I’m concerned this lawsuit is frivolous. The people who are really responsible for the attacks are already behind bars. It’s like suing the car manufacturer if your child was hit by a drunk driver.

This lawsuit reeks of greed. The kind of greed that can only come from ambulance chasing attorneys.

Pat from Belchspeak has a differing opinion.

You know if the parents teach their children that it isn’t ok for them to be talking to adult men that they don’t know on the internet. Let alone meet them in person, and the parents didn’t use Myspace as a babysitter there would have been no cause for a lawsuit.

This is absurd, in my opinion. I agree with the previous posts. It is the PARENT’s jobs to make sure their children are supervised while on the internet. This is a lack of parenting, and the lawsuit appears to be only a way for these uninvolved parents to collect some cash for their child’s misfortune. Sick Sick Sick.

You can’t sexually assault someone in cyberspace, atleast not yet. Its not ok for any child to physicaly meet anyone they met on the internet, no matter how old. The girl could have been assaulted by a fourteen year old boy. Rape is rape. where were the parents when their daughters were going to meet these rapists? The fact of the matter is parents and children have to be held accountable for their own actions. If I owned myspace I would counter sue the parents for child neglect and defamation of character. These lawsuits are a way for these parents to wash their conscience of any responsiblility for what happened to their children.

One of the lawsuits is by a girl from Houston Texas. It claims the boy is serving 10 years for sexually assaulting the girl. In Texas, “sexual assault” is the crime of consentual sex. Physically attacking the girl and raping her is “aggragated sexual assault.”

the vast majority of rapes are never reported. the majority of rapes in which myspace predators found victims cannot be known. myspace and anyone else must take responsibility and be held liable if it creates a hunting ground favorable to predators. norm la coe

Even though I have deleted my daughter’s account, she has gone behind my back to friends and re-created the space. I’ve notified this website twice to delete! Tom is irresponsible. All cyberspace accounts cannot be accountable until laws are changed to require an affadavit by snail mail. Then maybe we can be rid of the abuse, which is rampant.
