I’m trying to escape from Gmail but it’s hard to find a free e-mail service with comparable features but there is hope. The only service I’ve found so far that could be a Gmail killer is GMX Mail. Two problems though for me.
1. You can’t stay logged in all day.
2. And this is a big problem…it opens in a new window rather than the same window. That’s a deal breaker.

I always wondered why you just don’t use the free mail that comes with one of your domains? Or do you use free hosting?
I prefer webmail and the webmail my host provides just doesn’t have the features that gmail does.
I know what you mean. I really don’t like my squirrelmail. But I hate the way Gmail makes ads based on my content of my emails. I wonder if there’s a good cross between the two?
Try GMX. There are no ads. You may like it I just found it to be just short of Gmail’s features.
