Arizona couple starves toddler
June 23, 2008Police: Parents Abused 12-Pound Toddler:
31-year-old Edmundo Munoz and his wife, 25-year-old Morgan Lege, were arrested for child neglect when investigators discovered that Munoz’s 2-year-old son, Santiago Smoot, weighed only 12 pounds.
Lege said she reported finding Smoot in his bed at their home with his eyes open with a very glazed, non-focused look. He was diagnosed with respiratory failure, hypoglycemia, acute altered mental status and history of failure to thrive and develop, according to medical records.
Medical staff stabilized the child and flew him to Desert Banner Medical Center Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Police said the child’s condition was due to severe malnutrition and parental neglect, not medical causes.
Now get ready for the even more weird part.
Munoz claimed that he was limiting Santiago’s food intake because he would eat until he vomited. Also while Santiago was in the hospital Munoz would hide some of his hospital food claiming the hospital was feeding him too much.
This reminds me of a story from years ago about a vegan couple who were arrested for pretty much the same thing and the parents acted just as weird. I’m not saying that’s what’s going on here but it seems eerily similar. If I had to take a guess I might also say that the father adheres to some cultlike belief and feels it necessary to inflict it on his son.
