Oduwole set free on bond:
Olutosin Oduwole, the 22-year-old student accused of making threats against SIU-Edwardville, has posted his rather large bond.

Olutosin Oduwole had been held at the Madison County Jail. On Wednesday morning his father came to the Criminal Justice Center in Edwardsville and delivered a check for $110,000, 10 percent of his $1.1 million bail. Oduwole, 22, was released at 10:55 a.m. At a hearing last week, a judge last week refused to reduce his bail.

The conditions of Oduwole’s bond prohibit him from being within 1,500 feet of the SIUE campus. On Wednesday morning, the university issued a statement calling Oduwole a “persona non grata” and noted that he was prohibited from “entering or remaining upon any property owned or controlled by SIUE until further notice.”

And where do these guys keep finding these funny lawyers?

After the bond reduction hearing, Oduwole’s attorney Phil Dennis said that Oduwole aspired to be a rap artist and that the words were simply an idea for a rap song. The lyrics were inspired by a cartoon called Robot Chicken, he said, which has an episode in which a similar threat is made.

Charges would not have been filed against Oduwole, Dennis said, had he not had a foreign name had there not been such a fear of terrorism in the community.

Let’s just gloss over that a gun was found in his dorm and that he was nervously awaiting the arrival of several more weapons. But since when do facts get in the way of a criminal defense attorney?

Also Oduwole has pleaded not guilty.

After an arraignment, Oduwole said the media mistakenly characterized him as a terrorist. He says God knows he didn’t have evil intentions when he wrote the note.

He says he wrote it months ago, long before a student gunman went on a rampage at Virginia Tech, killing himself and 32 students.

It doesn’t matter when you wrote it Sunshine. That fact is that you did. And I wouldn’t call him a terrorist either. More like a thug.

  1. Philip Dennis says:

    Let’s be clear,
Olutosin had never touched the guns. He was purchasing from a distributor, who would ship them to a distributor, and they would ship to the third party purchaser. Olutosin had a gun, a 25 cal secured in his dorm storage area, and he did not write the threat on a note intended to be delivered. It was found after a warrantless search of his car, on the floor of the rear, scribbled on the page with rap lyrics.
He is not saying that “Robot Chicken” made him do it. He got the quote from an episode of “Robot Chicken” which is now in evidence.
Olutosin is the president of a college fraternity who has worked to provide homes for the homeless, and has raised money to feed the poor. He is not a Nigerian threat, he went to school in the Midwest and goes to a Catholic Church here.
As for Rap Lyrics, is it possible that you all have missed the songs about 911, and Columbine that have been in the top forty? Let’s be clear… Do you want the police searching your car without a warrant, and then restricting you from writing about things that are too offensive for the government? Let’s start goosestepping now.

And what was he planning to do with those guns?

Personally I could care less that he’s Nigerian but he seems like a threat all the same.

And how many of those demand ransom?

Police don’t need a warrant to search your car, only probable cause.

  3. He must be a “thug” because he’s black. If he were white he’d be considered misguided youth.

  4. Not on this site. I usually call them spoiled suburban punks. I’m an equal opportunity offender.
