Utah Legislator Refers to Bully as The Columbine Game:
The other day I posted about Utah State Representative Scott Wyatt and his proposed legislation. Apprently Rep. Wyatt has been drinking Jack Thompson’s Kool-Aid because the legislation was written by Thompson. Thanks to SPOnG via GamePolitics we have a partial transcript of a hearing from the Utah State Legislature with Jim Olsen, president of the Utah Retail Merchants Association.
Legislator: I have one question.
Olsen: Okay.
Legislator: The game, Bully. What would that be rated? Are you familiar with that game?
Olsen: I am not familiar with that game.
(off-mic voice believed to be that of bill sponsor Rep. Wyatt):
Legislator: That’s the Columbine game?
Olsen: It’s rated T for teen.
Legislator: Okay.
(off-mic voice believed to be that of Rep. Wyatt): The Columbine game’s rated Teen
Legislator: The Columbine game’s rated T?
(off-mic voice believed to be that of Wyatt): It’s not? What’s it rated?
(off-mic voice believed to be that of Steve Sabey, attorney for the ESA): It’s a web game. It’s not rated
Legislator: Okay, that’s great
I know this goes without saying but how do legislators think they can legislate games when they don’t know a damn thing about them. Maybe if they stopped trying to appeal to uninformed do-gooders just to get themselves re-elected and tried, oh I don’t know, pass real laws about real crimes. A minority of gamers commit crimes. It’s not because of the games. And as long as uninformed politicians keep taking Jack Thompson seriously our political process will keep getting bogged down with crap like this. There’s too much crap in legislature already.
