Long Island Threat
May 11, 2005Teen Arrested for School Violence Threat:
A 17-year-old who wrote on a desk a warning he would execute a “Columbine”-type shooting was arrested two days before the date he threatened to enact his plan, police say.
Suffolk County Police Fourth Precinct officers arrested Matthew Corapi of Nesconsett for writing the desktop note at Smithtown High School. The note was discovered on April 20—the anniversary of the Columbine school massacre in Littleton, Colorado. It warned that the shooting would happen on May 11, but police arrested and charged Corapi on May 9.
Detectives used handwriting analysis to narrow down suspects, officials say. Corapi, a junior, was charged with falsely reporting an incident and is scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
No motive given at this time.
